This week, we introduce you to the passionate and inventive hairstylist Gow Tanaka. He has collaborated with Lula, Nylon, British Vogue and Elle magazines and has styled the beautiful, celebrity locks of Emma Watson and Florence Welch. On top of this he is currently working on a special project of his own, the intriguingly named ‘Haircentric’.
TCD: What made you want to become a hairstylist?
GT: When I was 15, hair styling was most important thing in the world to me – so I started to work in a salon, and I liked it.
TCD: If you could make a list of your favourite contemporary hairstylists, who would you pick?
GT: Eugene Souleiman and Orlando Pita, to name a couple.
TCD: If you were to tag yourself on TCD, what 3 words would you use?
GT: ‘Fast’, ‘Creative’ and ‘Gets it done!’.
TCD: So what exciting projects are you working on right now?
GT: I have been building up my project “Haircentric” (working title) which is based on an idea for an innovative iPad application, exploring fashion and contemporary culture – a story told through thousands of hairstyles around the globe.
TCD: What would be your dream commission?
GT: To be commissioned to do the Haircentric project.
TCD: Go on, tell us a secret?
GT: Are you joking?
