This week, we wanted to know more about one of the Creatives mentioned by model Alyssa Miller in her TCD List of favourite Photographers: Bjorn Iooss. Bjorn, who was born and lives in New York, is the son of the sports Photographer Walter Iooss who took iconic pictures of the greatest athletes including Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Muhammad Ali. Bjorn’s portraits combine stylised elements with deliberately classic aesthetics; he’s notably shot for L’Uomo Vogue, Vogue Japan and China, Vogue Hommes Japan and The Telegraph Men’s Style Magazine.
TCD: What made you want to become a photographer?
BI: I grew up with a father who is a sports photographer, and his own father was a Jazz musician and a photography hobbyist. He turned my father onto photography and then my father did the same with me. It runs in the family! Both my parents are very visual and artistic. Photography was just a natural progression from a childhood of being creative. It was never really a conscious choice but more of a way of life within my family.
TCD: If you could make a list of your favourite contemporary photographers, who would you pick?
BI: Irving Penn, Annie Leibovitz, Guido Mocafico, Stephen Gill, Nadav Kander and Wayne Lawrence.
TCD: If you were to tag yourself on TCD, what 3 words would you use?
BI: Portrait, Classic, Dark.
TCD: So what exciting projects are you working on right now?
BI: Something personal but I can’t really say what yet.. It’s top secret!
TCD: What would be your dream commission?
BI: To shoot for Vanity Fair.
TCD: Go on, tell us a secret?
BI: I’ve been doing judo for the last four years now. So don’t try to steal my cameras!
