Sophie Beresiner, Beauty Director at ELLE UK, recently shared a list of her favourite creatives with TCD – which our subscribers can access here. We wanted to know more about Sophie, who’s also a Stylist and author of a blog, “I Love Lipstick”. ‘Punchy’, ‘eclectic’, ‘experimental’: the three words chosen by Sophie to describe herself reveal an individual full of creative energy and exciting projects.
TCD: What did you do before being Elle UK’s Beauty Director?
SB: ELLE is where I wanted to end up in my editorial career and it’s taken me ten years to get here. I started at ELLE Girl (RIP) and have been trying to get back to the brand ever since. The last five years were at LOOK, which really developed my commercial strengths.
TCD: Where does your interest in Beauty come from?
SB: I couldn’t tell you, something just made me do it. I love product design, just the whole aesthetic of everything that comes with beauty is appealing to me. Colour, packaging, shoot visuals, make-up design, nail art. Not least: the writing and personal experimenting.
TCD: Which part of your Beauty Director role do you prefer?
SB: Being part of a team of highly skilled and highly creative people. Seeing my ideas and visual concepts result in print, once art have worked their magic, is very cool too. I will always love shooting and creating something from nothing. It’s like A Level Art everyday!
TCD: You’re also a Stylist; what made want to become one?
SB: I just love shooting. Any aspect of the process is appealing, and the styling is a very important part of the story. It’s nice to concentrate on just one element instead of running the show too. Plus I LOVE clothes.
TCD: How would you describe your own style?
SB: Essentially classic but with any kind of twist. Normally in the form of a statement shoe or a crazy trouser.
TCD: So what exciting project(s) are you working on right now?
SB: ELLE UK has had a very recent total redesign. I came on board just in time to have input into how the new beauty pages will look, so I’m currently planning, strategising, waking up in the middle of the night to jot ideas down, with a view to launching a new refreshed beauty section soon. Watch this space.
TCD: What’s the purpose of your “I Love Lipstick” blog? Is it important for you to be able to express yourself on a separate, independent platform?
SB: I found some of the restraints of print publishing limiting and as readers and consumers get more and more savvy there is a certain element of honesty and spontaneity that is increasingly important. I found that my blog was a way to express a more personal opinion. ELLE has a very strong digital and social presence which explores every angle though so I don’t find myself blogging very much anymore!
TCD: Can you tell us more about your recent collaboration with Canon?
SB: They were looking for ‘Generation M’, a group of creatives who work with visuals, and who could reinterpret a certain style of photography in a unique way. I chose still life, since it’s integral to what I do, and reinterpreted it in an editorial way, using the canon E0S M myself at every stage. It’s a cool camera that one.
TCD: If you were to tag yourself on TCD, what 3 words would you use?
SB: Punchy, eclectic, experimental.
TCD: What would be your dream commission?
SB: Topshop make-up campaign. Six year contract.
TCD: Go on, tell us a secret?
SB: I hate having manicures, facials, having my hair done, can’t relax in massages – I’m a terrible beauty representative!
